ABOUT PUNTA GORDA

Punta Gorda is a wonderful place to live. It's the county seat and the only incorporated city in Charlotte County and it is filled with friendly people with small town values and loads of civic pride.  You'll find something going on in one of the city parks almost every week; concerts, craft fairs, festivals, fund raisers, picknics...

Punta Gorda is an active coastal town with miles and miles of waterfront. The Peace River, Charlotte Harbor and many miles of Gulf Access canals offer opportunities for boating, sailing, fishing and other water sports.

Punta Gorda is also a center for cultural events and classes. The Visual Arts Center draws artists, teachers and art students from the entire region and it hosts some of the finest art exibits in the country. You'll also find many and varied art galleries in the downtown and historic districts. The Performing arts center hosts many theatrical, dance and other productions and it is the home of the Charlotte County Symphony Orchestra. The new 43,500 sq ft Event and Conference Center on the Peace River is bringing in more events and activities.

There is even more for sports enthusiasts. Golf is popular here and there are many Golf Course for all levels of play and golf tournements almost every week.  The Charlotte County Speedway is a popular venue for motor sports and the Charlotte County Sports Park is the Spring Training Home of the Tampa Bay Rays Baseball Team. You'll find Rodeo and other events at the Charlotte County Fairgrounds. National level Fishing Tournaments and sailing races are held here as well. 

Every third Thursday of the month Punta Gorda hosts the very popular "Gallery Walk" through the Historic District where many of the business stay open late and provide entertainment and refreshments. 

Punta Gorda has a wide variety of wonderful restaurants and unique shops that are tucked here and there throughout the city. Fisherman's Village is a waterfront botique and restaurant mall with a center court that hosts music and other events.

Punta Gorda means "broad" or "Fat" point and was named over 500 years ago when it was the landing point for Spanish Explorers. Today Punta Gorda supports a growing population of over 12,000 residents and has been consistently named one of the top places to live in the United States. Located on the eastern shore of Charlotte Harbor at the mouth of the Peace River, Punta Gorda has Over 56 miles of Salt Water canals with city maintained sea walls. Housing includes condos, villas, and single family homes and home sites.

are Punta Gorda's "back yards".  The extensive network of canals in Punta Gorda are popular, city maintained waterways that offer direct access to Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico. Not only is Charlotte Harbor the tarpon fishing capitol of the world but it is also one of the best sports fishing spots red fish redfish, snook, mackerel, makeral and is a popular stop for many national tournaments tournements. Punta Gorda is also a great place for sailing. Open Waters, many great anchorages and water weater are some of the reasons why Sail Magazine listed Punta Gorda and Charlotte Harbor in 2004 as one of the top ten places in the Nation for sailing.

Our canals are especially delightful during the winter Holiday season when residents light up the backs of their homes with dazzling displays of lights for all to enjoy. If you don't have your own boat to cruise the canal system to see the lights, the fleet of rental and charter boats are available at Fisherman's Village. A lighted boat parade along the Peace River is also an annual event.

Community festivals, art fairs, concerts and  entertainment are enjoyed year round in the parks, at Fisherman's Village, at the Punta Gorda Performing arts center and will soon be available again at the brand new Punta Gorda Events Center now under construction. 

Golf is alive and well in Punta Gorda. in 2005 Golf Digest named Punta Gorda as one of the best places to live if you like to play golf. There are golf courses everywhere for all levels of play and we have the perfect weather for keeping your tee-time year round.
