As it's name indicates, the unincorporated community of North Fort Myers is located North of Fort Myers just across the Caloosahatchee River. Sprawling along the US 41 Corridor Northward to the Charlotte County Line, North Fort Myers is an new/old community that finds itself being rediscovered and renewed.
Dating from the 1870s when it was established as the community of New Prospect, North Fort Myers has seen many changes. When US 41 (the Tamiami Trail) was built between creating a link between Tampa and Miami, North Fort Myers became a pass-through stopping place for tourist and travelers. Motels, gas stations, trailor parks and small tourist attractions florished along the highway. When Interstate 75 was completed in the early 1980's it immediately affected the economy of North Fort Myers. Motels and businesses closed and many people were left jobless, many moved away and others found new jobs in Fort Myers. The area became somewhat neglected until builders and developers discovered the value of this riverfront community.
There has been a 34% increase in population since 1990. Located between Sarasota and Naples with lots of undeveloped land, North Fort Myers has become an area of opportunity. New upscale communities are taking the place of run down motels. New golf courses are dotting the landscape and there are new businesses, shopping areas and communities.
